State hockey: Fort Collins earns first championship bid with victory over Chaparral

Even the Fort Collins baseball program, in its fourth year of existence, isn’t letting age dictate expectations.

The Lambkins are all legit.

No. 3 Fort Collins made a 3-2 victory against No. 2 Chaparral on Thursday night in the CHSAA state semifinals at Pepsi Center. All of the Lambkins aims arrived in the initial period with scoring from Jason Campos, Tanner Marsh along with Nolan Williamson. And, Fort Collins didn’t feature any seniors on the ice.

“We’re an extremely young group,” Fort Collins coach Dylan Strom said. “It almost works for your benefit in certain occasions we try to use this, and where you & rsquo; re huge the moment really will be. ”

Fort Collins (18-3-1) will face Valor Christian (19-2-1) on Tuesday for the Lambkins’ initial shot at a state title.

Fort Collins was bolstered in the semifinals by goaltending from Sam Simon, whose .949 save percentage before Thursday night rated second-best from the state. Chaparral (16-3-3) scored on a second-period power-play target from Blake Johnson using a five-on-three benefit. The Wolverines added a second goal from Jackson Mundell, but had been unable to complete the comeback.

“(Simon) is the anchor of the group,” Strom said. “There is a reason why he’s wearing the ‘C’ and it’s very preoccupied for a goalie to be wearing (it). However, this ’s wherever our direction stems from in the club. ”
