Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Red Rocks is one of the premier outdoor concert venues, offering spectacular natural acoustics produced by Ship Rock and Creation Rock’s sandstone monoliths – making every performance at Red Rocks truly unforgettable!

Denver began construction of their amphitheater in 1927 when they purchased the area to begin work on it, using CCC and WPA workers from Depression-era public work relief programs for years before finally finishing it in 1941.

It’s a National Historic Landmark

Red Rocks has long been one of America’s premier musical venues, famous for the natural acoustics created by its giant sandstone monoliths that formed in the Fountain Formation over 280 million years ago. Artists still book shows there even when more spacious venues would offer better acoustics.

Red Rocks Amphitheater was constructed between 1936 and 1941 by members of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal program Civilian Conservation Corps, to put young men to work and help heal from Great Depression. George Cranmer, manager of Denver Park System convinced CCC members to assist in creating this amphitheater designed by architect Burnham Hoyt.

In 2015, this park and amphitheater received national historic landmark status and has become a favorite destination for music fans, hikers, yoga practitioners, and anyone simply looking to take in stunning scenery. On non-concert days the park fills up quickly with locals exercising while tourists come by to take in its magnificent vistas.

It’s a Music Hall of Fame

Red Rocks’ rock formations, which resemble two giant pyramids surrounded by Ship and Creation Rocks, naturally amplify sound to provide the ideal venue for concerts. Since Red Rocks first opened its doors, music lovers from all around the globe have come here to witness their favorite bands play live and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Red Rocks has been graced by music legends including Nat King Cole, the Beatles (during “Beatlemania”), Ray Charles, Elvis and the Eagles – to name but a few. Additionally, Red Rocks is home to Colorado Symphony Orchestra which transforms popular songs into grand orchestral masterpieces.

Red Rocks is home for jam band Widespread Panic, who continue to sell out shows year after year thanks to their dedication and connection with their audience. Fans are extremely dedicated and treat every show like it could be their last performance of Widespread Panic’s stellar performance.

It’s a Park

Red Rocks Park not only hosts world-renowned musicians but is also home to hiking trails and outdoor activities. Open year round except during concerts or events.

Amphitheatres are situated at an altitude of approximately 6,000 feet, so the evening sun can cause it to become quite cool. Therefore, it is advisable to wear comfortable fitness shoes and bring along light jackets, as well as plenty of water and snacks for optimal viewing pleasure.

As part of an event at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, many attendees enjoy tailgating before concerts – bring along your cooler and enjoy your meal before entering the venue! If you don’t have access to a vehicle of your own, shuttle services such as Bus To Show and Turtle Bus offer shuttle rides directly from their locations; alternatively you could book one of Denver Arts & Venue‘s guided Red Rocks Amphitheatre Tours with Denver Arts & Venues or purchase tickets for their self-guided Experience the Music Tour option!

It’s a Venue

Red Rocks Amphitheatre provides an unrivaled concert experience. Constructed of 400ft-high red sandstone rocks, this majestic theater provides outstanding acoustics that can seat up to 9,525 attendees – it is on many music lovers’ bucket lists as a bucket list event; many musicians dream of performing there themselves!

Many artists are willing to forego making big ticket sales just to play here, which draws both major artists as well as family friendly Easter Sunrise Services and film screenings.

When attending a concert, make sure you arrive well-hydrated and prepared for the altitude. Locals tend to arrive early with coolers in hand to hang out in the vast parking lot before taking advantage of free food vendors who often offer better choices than those inside the arena itself. But beware – traffic leaving after an event may take an hour, so plan accordingly and if bringing children be sure they stay entertained through music and activities tailored for them!
