Denver Sports Omelette: CSU’s Nico Carvacho set to make history tonight against San Diego State

DenverSportsOmelettelogo

Two. This ’s.

Three to split it.

Forgive me somewhat for jumping the gun , but I don’t think it’s going out on a limb to say Colorado State’s Nico Carvacho will make history tonight and eventually be the Rams’ career leader in rebounds.

Carvacho, college basketball’s leading rebounder at 13 per match, enters tonight’s contest against San Diego State (9 p.m., ESPN2) together with 849 career boards, two shy of Pat Durham’s all time mark which has stood since 1989. Given this is a program which has seen the likes of Pierce Hornung and 7-foot NBA journeyman Jason Smith come through in the past 15 years, it’s hard to think that record hasn’t.

Now it will be.

Carvacho is a junior. From the time his career ends next Marchhe’ll have well over 1,000 laps in his illustrious CSU profession, a tenure in green and gold which was almost cut short when he had been awarded his release this past summer and considered transferring amidst the coaching change.

This year alone, he’s 18 double-digit firming attempts in 24 tries, including his past seven games (17 rebounds apiece in the latest declines to Wyoming and Nevada), and double has secured 20-plus boards (at UNLV and at Long Beach State). Not bad for a soccer player who didn’t start playing basketball until he was 15.

Big Chile is currently making history .
