Avalanche draft pick Cale Makar could be just months away from beginning his NHL career … in the playoffs

In late March or even mid-April, Avalanche top-prospect Cale Makar is bound to sign his NHL entry contract to conclude his career that was leading at the University of Massachusetts. The question is, will Colorado’s 2017 first-round draft pick (fourth overall) produce his NHL debut in the regular season or playoffs?

That is, the Avs, that are clingling to the last wild-card place, make the playoffs.

Makar is connected as faculty hockey’s second-highest-scoring defenseman (29 points, nine targets ) and has assisted second-ranked UMass (19-5) build among the most prosperous seasons in program history. Makar functions as an alternate captain also can be the Minutemen’s second-leading scorer on a group destined to make only its second NCAA Tournament appearance, and since 2007.

If UMass advances to its first Frozen Four and the Avs produce the playoffs — along with Makar signs instantly with Colorado — he won’t even have much time to get acclimated to the match before he so-called upon. The Frozen Four is a week after this year than in previous years, putting Makar on track to play in a Stanley Cup Playoff match before making his first NHL regular-season advent. “]

“What I’m seeing TV, it seems like a group I could jump into right away,” Makar mentioned of the Avs in November. “But at the conclusion of the daywe’ll wait and see if that time comes. ”

The UMass regular-season finale is March 8 at Connecticut. The Hockey East playoff tournament unfolds the ensuing two weekends before the NCAA Tournament regionals March 29-31. The Frozen Four at Key Bank Center in Buffalo, N.Y., is April 11-13.

The Avalanche’s regular-season finale is April 6 at San Jose. The playoffs will start April 10 or 11.

Makar, 20, is eligible to start his Avalanche career in the playoffs because he was drafted by the group and is consequently automatically about the group ’s reserve list at the Feb. 25 NHL trade deadline. Free agents cannot be on a reserve list since they are unaffiliated with teams.

The college player to make his NHL debut and create an effect was Chris Krieder, that travelled from Boston College to the New York Rangers in 2012. Krieder played in 18 Stanley Cup games before the Rangers dropped in the Eastern Conference finals to the New Jersey Devils.

Makar could make an immediate effect with the Avs this spring, however he’s happy with his choice to return to college for another season and serve as a youthful leader.

“I think it was a fantastic decision rather than rushing anything,” Makar, an alternate captain, explained. “I take great pride in being recognized among the leaders on this group. One of my other sophomore counterparts, Mario Ferraro, also features an A. It’s a major part for us to play but at the conclusion of the afternoon, it was picked by our staff along with I’m very hard to have it in my torso. I think we’ve created a fantastic culture here up to now.

Makar is among Colorado’s two leading youthful defenseman that is right-shot with presents that are offensive. Another, Conor Timmins, that was drafted 32nd in 2017 and signed his entry contract with an Avs last spring, has been closed down since July because of chronic concussion-like symptoms.

Makar and Timmins were mates Canada’s World Junior group a year ago.
