Avalanche’s MacKinnon, Landeskog and Rantanen will take the ice in preseason opener

The Avalanche’s Leading line of center Nathan MacKinnon along with wingers Gabe Landeskog along with Mikko Rantanen will Perform Tuesday’s preseason opener from the Vegas Golden Knights in the Pepsi Center, Colorado Trainer Jared Bednar said Monday after the training-camp finale in Family Sports Center.

Veteran defensemen Erik Johnson, Tyson Barrie and newcomer Ian Cole also will be in the 20-player lineup, also goalie Semyon Varlamov will start and perform 2 phases in net, Bednar said.

Spencer Martin is expected to substitute Varlamov for its third phase.

New winger Matt Calvert, has been acquired with Cole on July 1 through free service, will perform a lineup together with second-year center J.T. Compher and rookie right winger Logan O’Connor, the former University of Denver standout who was originally slated to serve as the Pioneers’ captain this season.

The Avs’ lineup Tuesday will be rounded out by kids — many of whom will probably be relegated to the minors or their teams during the preseason. The Avs are carrying five goalies, 19 defensemen along with 31 forwards. They need to get down to 23 players — likely 14 forwards, seven defensemen and two goalies — in the days leading in the Oct. 4 opener against the seeing Minnesota Wild.

Timmins revealing. Rookie defenseman Conor Timmins, who will celebrate his birthday Tuesday, taken pucks along with other injured players and skated in Monday’s ultimate training camp session. Timmins has been suffering from concussion-like symptoms. He was held from the Avs’ development camp in the end of June and still hasn’t been emptied for contract.

“Making process — slowly but certainly,” Bednar said of Timmins, the Avs’ 2017 second-round draft pick (No. 32 total ). “I really don ’t have some upgrade on him besides the fact he was going to try and skate today and find out how it goes. ”

Footnotes. The Avs’ two sessions Monday featured extensive work . MacKinnon’s was really about a unit with Compher at the middle and Barrie in the point in the semester. Second-year center Tyson Jost, that was about the No. 1 power play with the top line and Barrie last season, worked on the power play at the earlier session. … Defensemen Patrik Nemeth and Nikita Zadorov continue to exercise because of paring in red non-contact sweaters. Both had offseason shoulder surgery but are anticipated to be in the opening-night lineup. Zadorov said he was told that he ’ll play at the last three games.
