The Weeknd is still keeping his lips sealed about his 2021 Pepsi Super Bowl LV Halftime Show on Sunday (Feb. 7), but he did reveal he’ll be toning down the bloody details of his After Hours videos for those watching at home.
The R&B superstar, who will be the first Canadian solo Super Bowl performer, addressed reporters during the Pepsi Super Bowl LV Halftime Show Press Conference Thursday (Feb. 4) from the Tampa Convention Center. After recently unwrapping the narrative behind his full-face bandages, the “Can’t Feel My Face” singer promises to “try my best” when it comes to sticking to his yearlong story line as told by his gory and graphic music videos while being respectful to viewers.
“I definitely want to be respectful to the viewers at home,” The Weeknd said. “I will still incorporate some of the story line [from the videos] — it’s a very cohesive story I’m telling throughout this year, so the story will continue, but we definitely will keep it PG-[rated] for the families. I’ll try my best.”

His manager Wassim “Sal” Slaiby told Billboard in their latest cover story interview that The Weeknd fronted $7 million of his own money to “make this halftime show be what he envisioned.” But he won’t let up on any details regarding his vision, besides the fact that he and his team “built the stage within the stadium” and are “also using the field.”
He also noted Diana Ross’ 1996 halftime show as his favorite of all time and one of the previous Super Bowl performances that inspired his own this coming weekend, as well as Prince’s, Michael Jackson’s and Beyoncé‘s.
“She’s just so glamorous and the show just makes me smile,” he reflected. “And she has a great exit with the helicopter — it lands in the middle of the field, she grabs onto it and flies off into the clouds, it’s like… I wish I could have done that, I wish I’d thought of it. Although I don’t think I have enough money to do it!”
