A little more than fourteen days into the coronavirus hiatus and NBA heads are becoming restless.

Players whose bodies have been conditioned to ramp up their performance are currently stewing. Trainers who would ordinarily be scouting playoff competitions are left with an void. Media, typically tasked with figuring tiebreak scenarios out are forced to speculate.

Will there be a second training camp? Can the Nuggets play with their 17 games of the regular day schedule? Can the playoffs be truncated? Are fans a part of the equation? Will there be a date beyond which the NBA wouldn’t consider extending this season?

In an interview with ESPN, NBA commissioner Adam Silver was requested to come back. In his response, he offered this carrot: “All suggestions welcome. ”

So as to return, the NBA has to assess these four factors, in no particular order: Time, danger, money and tournament window.

Many have speculated that Labor Day — Sept. 7 — would indicate an absolute date. Assessing the season would potentially impede the beginning of next season. That’s a little over five months from a good quantity of time depending on when the virus abates. That’s clearly unknowable. But prior to locking down any plans, the NBA would need to learn how long it had to condense a postseason, a regular season and a coaching camp into.

For context, LeBron James speculated he’d require frac12; weeks of a training camp followed by everywhere from season games & a minimum of 1.

“You’ve been building six months of conditioning and preparation …” James said on the Road Trippin’ tradition, which makes the point that his inner clock isn’t utilized to decompressing at March.

With time, could the league believe three- or five-game series from the postseason? With time, might the league and the rest of its regular season play?

That bleeds into another component: danger. By suspending the league prior to another U.S. sports business, the NBA already established its willingness to get facing this pandemic. Silver wasn’t ready to assume any more danger after Rudy Gobert’s favorable test. The same should be presumed while the league yields. It’s doubtful fans will be allowed as that would expose both the matches and them to threat to see in person.

Playing with games without fans would constitute a ground. It ’s safe to assume the NBA will think about anything to mitigate threat. For that reason, would the league consider ushering all of eight playoff teams from each conference to one city to be able to reduce exposure and travel? Maybe four regions for 16 teams would suffice.

To get a set amount of regular season matches, in which a cluster of groups could be dispersed yet preparing for the playoffs, perhaps something similar could be done in that vein.

Everything’so per Silver’s directive, but revenue is going to have an say in what happens. Celtics fans have been robbed of an NCAA Tournament this season. Can a 30-team tournament, as suggested by Brooklyn Nets shield Spencer Dinwiddie, assist satiate owners? It’therefore a dance Silver will endeavor to pull off over the upcoming few months.

Ultimately, it’s impossible not to think about the opinions of this team ’s frontrunners, who’t spent solidifying homecourt advantage and developing a staff capable of raising the Larry O’Brien decoration. James is 35, and the Lakers have held onto the No. 1 seed the majority of the season. Doesn’t he deserve a chance to win his ring? Doesn’t Giannis Antetokounmpo and Milwaukee’s dominance justify? Silver understands that his players are waging an unwinnable battle against time.

We could do nothing but speculate as the league figures out the best way to churn into action. All ideas are welcome.
