Jazz Vocalist Norah Jones

Norah Jones has created her music career through a diverse set of influences. From church choir singing and piano playing, to alto saxophone playing and touring with bands like Wax Poetic.

Norah Jones might appear like the typical lounge act. But her 2002 debut Come Away With Me has now been released in super-deluxe form to reveal all her depth.

Born in New York City to Indian sitarist Ravi Shankar and Sue Jones

Norah Shankar was first exposed to live performances at 16 at an open mic night. Later she studied jazz piano and sang with the University of North Texas Jazz Singers where she met guitarist Jesse Harris.

Once she relocated back to New York City in 1999, she quickly started touring and recording with various musicians. In 2001 on Blue Note Records came her debut album Come Away With Me.

Norah Jones made her debut with Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters when touring and recording Jacksonville City Nights album together in 2005. Since then she has also contributed vocals on Ryan Adams’ 2011 Ashes & Fire album as well as producer Danger Mouse for 2012 album Little Broken Hearts with its country, pop, folk-pop with jazzy elements sound.

Moved to Texas as a child

Jones began her musical studies at an early age in Texas, immersing herself in traditional vocal music and bluesy country before developing her own distinctive blend of contemporary jazz with both genres. She attended Interlochen Arts Camp and Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts before studying at University of North Texas – where she won Best Student Jazz Vocalist awards twice!

Norah released her debut album Come Away With Me to critical and commercial acclaim in 2002, cementing her place as one of the best-selling female artists of 2000s.

2009 saw her release The Fall, her first in five years with more of a rock-oriented sound, while 2014’s Little Broken Hearts saw her collaborate with producer Danger Mouse (Brian Burton), known for adding his eclectic and funky flair to records by Gnarls Barkley and the Black Keys among many other projects.

Made her debut in New York City

Norah Jones has explored many genres since her 2002 debut album, Come Away with Me. Since then, the Grammy-award-winning musician has released albums that integrate jazz, soul, country and pop.

Her next album, The Fall (2009), explored the pain of breakup while expanding her musical palette with moody electric instrumentation reminiscent of rock and soul music. Norah Jones’ new record, Day Breaks (2020), marks a return to her roots while also establishing her as one of this generation’s most innovative artists and purveyors of an undeniably distinct sound.

Released her first album in 2002

Jones earned her break after impressing an employee from Blue Note jazz label during a gig and being offered a contract. Her debut album, Come Away With Me, produced “Don’t Know Why”, the single that propelled her career forward.

On her second album, Feels Like Home, she played a larger part in song composition while broadening her musical boundaries with subtle country inflections. Despite all expectations placed upon her petite shoulders, she appeared casual about this endeavor.

She has always maintained this approach to her music since, with each album maintaining an air of relaxed beauty and effortless charm. Since then, she has sold over 30 million albums; audiences around the world have enjoyed listening to her soothing renditions of Great American Songbook standards and country classics.

Released her seventh album in 2020

Norah Jones has enjoyed great critical and commercial success over her career, releasing numerous critically-acclaimed and commercially successful albums. Additionally, she has collaborated on numerous projects with other artists–Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane helped produce “Two Sleepy People.” Furthermore, Norah performed at many major events such as 2015 MusiCares Person of the Year tribute concert honoring Bob Dylan.

Come Away With Me was an international success and won her the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, Best New Artist and Record of the Year (for Jesse Harris’ “Don’t Know Why”). Since then she has released Feels Like Home (2004), Not Too Late (2007), The Fall (2009), Little Broken Hearts (2012) Day Breaks 2016 and Visions 2017.

Norah Jones’ latest album is an upbeat, gentle psychedelic garage-soul set that showcases her sultry vocals over fuzzy guitars, off-kilter drums and vintage keyboards. These songs explore themes such as being free, wanting to dance, making right decisions in life and accepting what comes our way.
