The decision-makers in the Denver Nuggets’ front workplace used to play a home game game regarding franchise pillar Nikola Jokic.

Had the Nuggets not chosen Jokic with the No. 41 choice in the 2014 draft, a prescient selection that set the basis for this year ’s surprising success, how large, they believed, could he have gone a year after a breakthrough year overseas?

The origin of the team’s resurrection could be tracked into April 2014, if the Nuggets monitored Jokic, a 7-foot center from Serbia, in the Nike Hoops Summit in Portland. He did, and the Nuggets discovered their second-round diamond.

The logical query, almost five years later, is how did so many teams miss on Jokic?

“It’s this inexact science,” Nuggets president of Basketball Operations Tim Connelly said of the NBA draft.  “Nikola, up to that point, his specialist amounts (in Europe) hadn’t been something that could leap off the page, and the human body type is one it’s easy to get questions regarding. ”

Future Houston Rockets first-round pick Clint Capela, a bouncy 6-10 forward from Switzerland, was on the global roster with Jokic in Portland and recalled the week well.  Capela was a raw however highly touted prospect whom Jokic picked besides his medical footwork and deft touch around the rim.

“He’s been (athletic),” Capela joked. “From playing in Europe, he was kind of doing everything already. I recall he hit a couple 3s in a row, even a excellent post-up player. … A bunch of gamers from Europe always come up with a way to play clever and efficient. This is the way we play. ”

Trey Lyles, one of four future Nuggets on the global roster in the Summit, got spared embarrassment.

“Yeah, (Jokic) was going at everybody,” Lyles stated. “I was on his team so I got to watch it. ”

However Lyles, whom the Nuggets finally traded for on draft night in 2017, recalls Jokic’s performances vividly.

“Nobody knew who he was,” Lyles stated. “I think it was the next day of practice. He was killing everybody and completely went off. ”

After being hammered, Jokic spent the next year tearing up the Adriatic League en route to the league MVP honors prior to starting his Nuggets profession in 2015, the exact same year Michael Malone took over as coach.

“The year later he was the first time we watched glimmers of a guy that would be a showpiece guy,” Connelly said.

At last the Nuggets had a block.

The Nuggets were a franchise lacking the identity when Malone arrived.  Malone, having been dressed as an assistant on a few of the best chairs in the NBA prior to an unceremonious departure as head coach in Sacramento, brought a detail-oriented strength to his occupation.

But he didn’t even have much ability to utilize. In case Jokic’s ascension overseas provided potential, then Gary Harris’ introduction increased alarm bells.

Harris appeared lost during his rookie year and struggled mightily with his shooter. However, the Nuggets liked Harris’ intangibles and believed they can mould him into a guard.

“He has been symbolic of everything we wish to be,” Connelly said. “Draft a good player and a fantastic guy, let’s play by errors, type of find his legs in the NBA and now we’re reaping the rewards. ”

In 2016, Malone discovered a kindred spirit in Jamal Murray, the team’s fearless No. 7 pick. But if you question those pulling the causes inside of Denver’s front office, they’d inform you how lucky they were to get Murray, then a precocious point guard out of Kentucky.

The next step for this iteration of the Nuggets is a postseason berth, that seems like a certainty, after which a very long postseason run, that hasn’t happened because 2008-09, when Denver created the Western Conference Finals.
