Just when Isaiah Thomas was poised to grab the Wednesday news cycle, Joe Flacco and the Broncos swooped in and picked off him.
The buzz which Thomas, the 30-year-old Nuggets point guard, could finally make his season debut against the Sacramento 11 months after hip operation, was anticipated to be the story of this afternoon — until reports surfaced that the Broncos had reached a deal in principle to acquire the 34-year-old Flacco, the MVP Super Bowl XLVII, by the Baltimore Ravens.
Nuggets trainer Michael Malone reads the paper, also, so he chose to have a little fun with reporters — and yank Flacco’s chain a little — through his sociable press scrum in the Pepsi Center a couple of hours before the Nuggets tipped off against the Sacramento Kings. Rarely missing a chance to twist the knifeMalone mixed it up with Altitude TV announcer Chris Marlowe to kick off his news conference:
Marlowe: Can we talk a little about Isaiah Thomas?
Malone: I wish we can chat about Joe Flacco.
Reporter: OK, what can you wish to learn about Joe Flacco?
Malone: I don’t wan.
Reporter: He’s quite good, I figure.
Malone: Well, we’ll find out, correct? I wish to welcome him to Nuggets Country, though.
Interesting fact: Both Joe Cool and Malone moved into school in New Jersey — Flacco in Audubon High School, near Philadelphia, along with Malone in Seton Hall Prep in West Orange, not far from his New York City.
