Conor Timmins’ rookie opinion at Avalanche training camp was powerful in 2017 that coach Jared Bednar faced a choice: Jumpstart rsquo & the second-round defenseman;s NHL career? Or ship him back to juniors for evolution?

Colorado played it safe but knew his future was bright.

“We had discussions about him playing (us),” Bednar said. “That’so good he was. ”

On Monday, after three decades of setbacks and growth, the Timmins buzz returned to Pepsi Center as Colorado enters its second week of training camp 2.0. The Avs’ postseason seeding games start Aug. 2 at the Edmonton NHL bubble against the St. Louis Blues.

Will Timmins make the trip?

Bednar, about a Monday video conference phone, told reporters Timmins is ldquo rsquo;re. ”

“He’s been really good,” Bednar said. “I like his puck-moving skill. I believe he’s a real good passer. He&finds a means to transfer the puck in and out of this zone and rsquo; s a real heads-up player. … On the offensive side of stuff, I believe he’s very good, and his physicality and legitimacy in clinic have started to find yourself in these scrimmages. ”

Timmins’ NHL ascension was postponed after he signed his entry Avalanche contract . Even a concussion he suffered near the conclusion of his final year of junior hockey had symptoms — holding Timmins out of the full 2018-19 year for Avs’ AHL-affiliate Colorado Eagles.

Timmins seemed unfazed. He returned to the 2019 Avs training camp, and produced Colorado’s roster. But Timmins played only two NHL games before joining the Eagles, in which he went to miss with a injury.

“It’s been sort of a tough couple of years,” Timmins said Monday. “I haven’t had a whole great deal of chances to play with a good deal of games. Anytime I get additional reps and could be around the rink, particularly with these guys, is great for my development. It’s going to be very cool to be with this run. ”

Timmins said last year in the AHL — 27 points (3 goals) over 40 games — enabled his skillset to develop, particularly on defense, as Timmins operates toward earning a spot to the Avs’ 30-man roster.

“After enjoying a year at the American League, and fighting through some accidents even this year, I feel like (Timmins) is at a fairly good location,” Bednar said. “He’s coming in here as a player that wants to make an impact to our staff and a certain player. ”

Makar missing. For the second successive training camp clinic, the Avalanche were without Calder Memorial Trophy finalist Cale Makar. The rookie defenseman abandoned the ice midway through Saturday’s workout for unspecified reasons, using NHL rules at the coronavirus pandemic allowing Bednar to state just that Makar was “unfit” to complete the practice.

On Monday, with Colorado scrimmaging five-on-five with power-play scenarios, Makar stayed absent. Bednar didn’t have an upgrade on Makar’s status or whether the group is worried if he will be available to perform in Edmonton.

Coronavirus upgrade. The NHL announced Monday that just two players have tested positive for COVID-19 because July 13 for its third phase for return to perform (the start of training camps).

“I believe (the figures ) are encouraging,” Bednar said. “When you invest some time around our guys in our group and you also see how serious everyone is taking it, the way that they ’re going about their everyday lives, and ensuring that they ’re limiting their contact with people outside of our small bubble here in Denver, I think other teams are doing exactly the exact same thing. We’re testing and doing what we can to stay healthy so we can enter Edmonton as a nutritious group. ”
