Within a span of eight Wednesday, Jim Montgomery had been in and out of Denver, returning to Dallas early Thursday morning with another victory along with a 4-0-1 preseason record. The Dallas Stars’ first-year coach — and former University of Denver seat manager who led the Pioneers to five NCAA Tournaments in five decades, including two Frozen Fours and also the 2017 national championship — had no time for a homecoming before or after his team defeated the Avalanche 3-1 at the Pepsi Center.
However, Montgomery did make time to sit down to explore his go from Denver to Dallas since succeeding Ken Hitchcock in May. Life is amazing, “Monty” stated, being back at the NHL for the first time since playing with one game to the Dallas Stars at 2002-03, the end of an 11-year expert career that included 122 games with five NHL teams.
He does miss Denver along with a project he might probably could have retired , granted his achievement. He had been the NCAA’so called second-winningest trainer throughout his DU tenure.
“There’therefore a big difference between me being a mentor in the NHL and a participant in the NHL. I feel as if I belong as a trainer. As a participant, I always doubted if I belonged,” Montgomery, 49, said. “So I had been ready for it. This was the next challenge. I’t embraced it like that. I m convinced when I address the group — just like I had been at Denver from Day 1. ”
Montgomery isn’t who ’s the reaction. And the reaction from the Stars lately remind him when he told his first DU team to perform.
“They looked (in my ) like I had five heads,” Montgomery stated of the 2013-14 Pioneers. “And I’ve had a little bit of this. However, your very gamers, such as Tyler Seguin stated, ‘What do we do when we confronted this? ’ So that they get it done and the more we’re doing it, the better we’re becoming. That’s why I like a lot of (NHL) preseason games. This ’s your October of this normal season. ”
Montgomery demands puck support whenever you have ownership and puck strain when you overlook ’t. His coaching goes beyond the 3 zones in hockey, and involves duties in quadrants of each zone. Each of the five DU teams began before shooting off at the second part of the season.
Montgomery can draw on a salary together with the Stars, and he’ll traveling more. However, the game stays the same. He goes from coaching talented players that want to play at the NHL to bonafide stars of this game such as Seguin along with Dallas captain Jamie Benn.
“It hasn’t really been different. My connections with the players at Denver are much like the connections I have here,” Montgomery said. “These guys have been awesome. Guys like (Alexander) Radulov — he’s been unbelievable, a lot of pleasure to work with. We haven’t confronted adversity, but that said, that they ’re (telling) folks how much fun it is to come to work. ”
Montgomery and his wife Emily have four children, including a daughter, Olivia, and the movement was tough.
“He had been so comfy here with the sports teams and college — all of his buddies,” Montgomery stated of his 8-year-old son, J.P. “And it’s been hard for my wife. She had many great friends here in BackCountry (Highlands Ranch). There has been like five wives from BackCountry come to Dallas and visit. But she doesn’t have the support system. For me personally, it’s been wonderful. It ’s been so much pleasure. And I have friends. I have my staff and I’m meeting new folks all of the time. It’s been simple for me challenging on those two. They ’ re ok, the three children. ”
Montgomery and his family will be fine. They have a house in Colorado.
