The Piano Man

“The Piano Man” stands as one of the few examples in music history who can claim both iconic and universal recognition as their name implies, making Joel an extraordinary phenomenon in this regard. Joel’s 1973 hit single, an urban portrait depicting various New York characters’ lives through song, led Columbia Records to offer him a contract that would prove fruitful over his career span.

Although only Joel’s second single, this song quickly became a part of his live shows and has since sold over five million copies in America alone. Recently, Joel released a special version to benefit Homes for Our Troops foundation, using singer Cass Dillon from Long Island who reflects many servicemen and women currently stationed overseas.

Fans tuning into the CBS special that aired on Sunday, April 14, were outraged to find that local affiliates suddenly cut away to late newscasts during Billy Joel’s performance of “Piano Man.” One fan wrote on X (now TikTok) “you couldn’t produce a worse product.” Luckily, a full replay was later shown later this week.

The Police

Sting and Billy Joel kicked off their co-headlining show with an unforgettable duet performance of ‘Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, which both Joel and The Police recorded back in 1981.

Even though both artists were performing separately within the same stadium, they both made this moment their own – creating an unforgettable moment that left the crowd filled with contentment and satisfaction.

As Billy Joel took the stage, fans sang along and cheered with excitement. Once onstage, fans went wild for his classic hits including Piano Man and Only the Good Die Young which filled Petco Park. Even when rain started pouring soon after Joel started performing, smiles and laughter filled Petco Park – it was the perfect way to kickstart an unforgettable night at Petco Park – it showed why Billy Joel remains such a legend today!

The Nylon Curtain

Billy Joel fans typically name The Nylon Curtain as their favorite album among his 13 multiplatinum releases, thanks to its timeless songs such as “Allentown,” “Pressure” and the legendary “Goodnight Saigon.” It seems destined to remain relevant throughout time.

After the fun-loving Glass Houses, Piano Man took his music in a more serious and socially aware direction with this album. His blue-collar smarts, Broadway theatricality, and rock attitude all come together seamlessly on songs like “Allentown”, which paints a picture of Pennsylvania mining town’s decline during Reagan Era with sound like something out of The Deer Hunter movie soundtrack.

Even without Richie Cannata due to injury, Joel’s core band comprised of drummer Liberty DeVitto, bassist Doug Stegmeyer and guitarists Russell Javors and David Brown completed this masterpiece of musical artistry – it would become one of his finest records and career highlights.

Turn the Lights Back On

Billy Joel has had an intensely productive few years, including the release of a brand-new lyrical single after 17 years, two co-headlining shows with Sting, solo dates, and his Madison Square Garden residency for 10 years – but through it all, the Piano Man has managed to remain focused on what matters most: connecting with his fans.

On February 24, 2024 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Sting joined Joel for an intimate duet of “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”. Watch clips below!

Midway through Joel’s second set, Sting returned to perform on stage to join Joel for their classic duet “Big Man on Mulberry Street.” They traded verses as they performed side by side. It was an unforgettable moment that demonstrated they are still pals.
