Colorado spent the past two weeks trudging through a disastrous road trip. Perhaps the Avalanche were nostalgic. Because one shot of sold outside Pepsi Center energy burst Saturday afternoon into the group ’s dominant performance this season.
The Avalanche defeated the Kings 7-1 to tie some season-high for goals scored. The win gives Colorado (22-18-8) newfound momentum following a six-week period in which it won just two of 12 games. The Avs move on to sponsor the Predators on Monday along with the Wild on Wednesday prior to entering the All-Star break.
Colorado established ancient momentum midway through the first phase Saturday shortly following a failed power-play prospect. Defenseman Tyson Barrie tracked down a loose puck to both sides of Kings’ goaltender Jonathan Quick and grabbed it toward the net in which second-line center Carl Soderberg poked it into. Soderberg, who tallied his first career hat trick in a 6-3 victory Monday at Toronto, captured his 16th goal of the season — a profession for the 33-year-old Sweden indigenous. The Avs finished the opening period with a 16-5 shots on goal edge.

Colorado struck early adversity, though, when defenseman Erik Johnson endured an upper-body injury in the first stage and did not return. The Avs didn’t even pout. They poured it on.
Colorado added four goals over 10 minutes of the second period. First, winger Gabe Landeskog’s one-timer off the move from center Nathan MacKinnon. Secondly, a Barrie wrister through traffic. Third, a strike from winger Mikko Rantanen. And fourth, a short-handed goal with puck tipped into the atmosphere by winger Matt Calvert and exploited into by rookie center Sheldon Dries. Landeskog and Rantanen each play with a power-play advantage.
The Kings, trailing 5-0, swapped Quick in net for Jack Campbell. It barely made a difference. Colorado added two goals — a Rantanen steal-and-score along with defenseman Colin Wilson on a breakaway chance — to complete the second period leading 7-0. Rantanen endured a lower-body injury in the third period and did not return.
Scoring had been particularly difficult for Colorado through its recent battles with a 2.7-goal average over their last 10 games entering Saturday. The Kings’ lone goal from forward Ilya Kovalchuk arrived midway through the third phase with all the Avs shorthanded.
