Jared Bednar has scraped his normal strategy for discovering who protects the Avalanche web site.
As well as such as goaltenders Semyon Varlamov along with Philipp Grubauerthe leash appears particularly brief.
“I’m heading game-by-game and choosing a goalie that we think gives us the best opportunity to win,” Bednar said Tuesday, “and then reassess for another start and see if we still feel that way after the last game. ”
Colorado’s third-year coach is shifting perspectives from necessity as the Avalanche (22-19-8) hosts its final game before the All-Star break Wednesday night versus Minnesota (25-21-3) together with all the goaltending issues still unsettled.
Varlamovin his eighth Colorado year, has started 31 games this year with a 13-12-5 listing. His .908 save percentage ranks No. 30 in the NHL. Colorado’s inability to maintain good team defense in addition to Varlamov’s play in net resulted in three or more opponent aims in all but 2 of the previous 11 games.

Grubauer, added via transaction from Washington last summer, showed early promise with seven wins on his first 10 starts. However, December/January success has been difficult to achieve when playing in aid of an injured Varlamov. Grubauer has allowed 27 goals on his last nine appearances, or as Bednar explained, “we didn’t get effects. ” Grubauer’s last start was Jan. 8 at a 7-4 road loss at Winnipeg.
“Now Varly is back in and we’re still not getting outcomes,” Bednar said. “It’s likely to get competitive in our web and that’s how we need it. ”
The constant evaluation procedure for both players will grow through Bednar’s intimate watch through practices, plus discussion with goaltending coach Jussi Parkkila along with other Avs’ assistants. One factor, however, has shown more critical than the remainder.
“It’s likely to return to exactly what they’re doing in the games,” Bednar said. “That’therefore the most important thing; the operation on game night and that competition that night. Whoever is providing us the best opportunity. I understand that’s liquid. That goes down and up. It’s not any different than every other participant on your team. ”
