Avalanche breaks out of slump, routs Stanley Cup champion Blues

The Avalanche’s chilly spell may be over. The Avs, who entered Thursday to some three-game winless skid and having dropped four straight at home, put a major damage over the defending Stanley Cup champions at the Pepsi Center.

In a showdown involving Central Division rivals and a couple of the greatest clubs from the Western Conference, the Avs weathered a mid-game storm and went on to blast the Blues 7-3.

“All of the things we spoke about has been a great deal better,” ” Avs coach Jared Bednar said. “Really committed to how we wanted to perform with. ”

Nazem Kadri scored two goals along with Nathan MacKinnon needed a goal and three assists. Mikko Rantanen, Cale Makar along with J.T. Compher scored power-play objectives and goalie Philipp Grubauer gathered his first victory since Dec. 4 at Toronto; Grubauer was 0-4-1 in his previous five starts.

Colorado, that also had four assists in Sam Girard plus a late goal by Joonas Donskoi, led 1-0 after the first period and took a 4-2 lead into the third party. They obtained insurance aims from Kadri and Compher before Donskoi added any embarrassment to make it 7-3.

Robert Thomas scored two for the Blues (26-10-6, 58 points). Colorado, that went 3 of 5 on the power play and attained 42 shots for the fourth consecutive game, increased to 24-13-4 (52 points).

“Big triumph,” MacKinnon stated. “Scoring seven against a good defensive team is not going to occur again. However, good game by everyone. ’ that is it and solid s nice to finally get a win. ”

In a crazy, five-goal next interval, the Avs scored at 3:20 (Kadri), 7:40 (Rantanen) and 19:44 (Makar). The Blues got with goals from Robert Thomas and Alex Pietrangelo before Makar used his deadly wrist opportunity to restore Colorado’s two-goal lead.

“To achieve that goal down and give us a lead back was huge,” Bednar said.

Combined, there have been three power-play goals (Rantanen, Pietrangelo and Makar) at the next period, with the Avs going 2 for 3 and the Blues 1 .

Colorado dominated the first part of the centre frame by outshooting St. Louis 14-4. Kadri scored with a wrist shot in the goalline that appeared to carom off goalie Jordan Binnington for a 2-0 lead. And Rantanen obtained the following goal with a blast from the perfect circle.

But the Blues came living, rallying using a canning goal by Thomas and Pietrangelo’s slap shot only three seconds into Sam Girard’s interference minor. Thomas’ aim could have been prevented if defenseman Erik Johnson needed a stick, but he dropped it earlier from the change while trying to earn a check against the planks.

MacKinnon started the scoring with a Hart Trophy-worthy objective that was unassisted. He also caused a turnover against the sideboards from the defensive zone and then raced up ice on a breakaway before hammering Binnington with a fast wrist shot from between the circles with 11 seconds remaining in the period.

“Good drama pressure,” MacKinnon stated. “(Gabe Landeskog) was defending and their forwards, I only poked at it and got a breakaway. It was great that I finally murdered a breakaway. ”

Footnotes. The Avs’ scratches were forward Vladislav Kamenev along with defenseman Mark Barberio. …The Avs will not practice Friday but match at the airport for a mid-day trip to New Jersey. They’ll possess a morning skate ahead of Saturday’s game against the Devils. The trip features consecutive-night matches in New York against the Islanders and Rangers.
