That big hit on Matt Calvert late in Game 2 will force the Avalanche forward to miss Game 3

Calvert sustained his injury in the closing minutes of Game 2 Sunday, when he absorbed a enormous mid-ice check from Sharks defenseman Brent Burns. Just before the strike, Calvert dished the puck into Nathan MacKinnon for what turned into the game-winning target — an empty-netter that gave the Avs a 4-2 lead. They ended up winning 4-3 after Burns’ power-play goal with 11 seconds.

In hockey lingo, Calvert took a hit.

“He’s. We’re going to miss himand we’re going to need to step up accordingly,” Avs defenseman Ian Cole said of Calvert, whom he played with last year with the Columbus Blue Jackets. “It’s stuff like this makes a difference. It can’t be overstated those things matter. ”

Calvert also had a gritty aid on Colorado’s third goal, scored by Matt Nieto, who punched the puck across the goal line after Calvert prevented goalie Martin Jones from smothering it.

Sven Andrighetto will replace Calvert from the lineup, coach Jared Bednar said.

The Avs will otherwise use the same lineup as Game 2 (8 p.m., NBCSN). The Western Conference semifinal series continues Thursday with Game 4 in the Pepsi Center.

From the Sharks’ side, wounded forward Joe Pavelski and Joonas Donskoi won’t aren and play ’t. They both missed Games 1 and 2. Pavelski is the team captain who led San Jose with 38 goals.
