Don’t look now, but the Colorado Rockies may have the best position player in the National League.
At least, that’s if you’re purchasing what Sports illustrated is selling in its annual ranking of MLB’s top 100 players.
Guided by a “weighted three-year WAR formula,” SI’s group of eight baseball experts about standing the game ’, set s for the 2019 season. And if No. 100 is any indication — 19-year-old Vladimir Guerrero Jr. — we should probably take these positions with a grain of salt.
Call me crazy, but maybe a man should play with a game before we put him s best.
That said, things are looking pretty good for the Rockies, who had five players ranked among top 100: Right-handed pitcher German Marquez in No. 91, hometown hero Kyle Freeland in No. 87, shortstop Trevor Story in No. 46, Soggy Bottom Boy Charlie Blackmon in No. 44 and Arenado in No. 8.
Ahead of Arenado on the listing: 7. Jacob deGrom (Mets, RHP), 6. Chris Sale (Red Sox, LHP), 5. Jose Ramirez (Indians, 3B), 4. Francisco Lindor (Indians, SS), Max Scherzer (Nationals, RHP), 2. Mookie Betts (Red Sox, OF) and 1. Mike Trout (Angels, OF).
For those that’s five American Leaguers and 2 NL pitchers before we get Arenado. Which says two things: 1. Arenado is in good company, and 2.) The National League is lacking star power. (Especially considering players 9-12 are American Leaguers as well.)
So what exactly does this mean for a franchise with World Series aspirations?
The bar isn’t so high in the Senior Circuit. And maybe they ought to get ready to back up the Brink’s truck for Nolan.
