If you’re a school quarterback needing a better-than-deserved shot at the NFL, today is your opportunity.
If you’re an NFL team needing a company QB, decent luck with that.
The 2019 draft class isn’t exactly popping with elite quarterback gift, which can be terrible news for the Broncos, that, 15 matches into Case Keenum’s tenure as the starter, aren’t much from making us ask whether Trevor Siemian is considering coming back. After opting not to draft a quarterback past year (which turned out to be a fantastic decision given Baker Mayfield was away from the board at No. 1 and then Bradley Chubb dropped in the Broncos’ lap at No. 5), Denver could well be on the market for one on Day 1 encounter April 25.
Problem is, that the thin QB class lost even more heft Wednesday if Oregon’so Justin Herbert announced he’ll return to school next year. This news is a week later Michigan’so Shea Patterson announced he’d do exactly the identical thing.
In that situation, what choices are there for QB-needy groups like the Broncos?
This ’s a fast glance. Only the first three listed are considered first-round talent. North Carolina State’s Ryan Finley is also an alternative in later rounds.
Drew Lock, Missouri
Senior
6-foot-4, 225 pounds
2018 passing stats: 252 for 399, 3,125 yards, 25 touchdowns, 8 INT
Expert’s take: “He’s a lot like Jay Cutler — both good and poor. Driver will toss the ball a time but he has never met a coverage he couldn’t squeeze a move into, and sometimes his conclusions leave you wondering whether he even had his eyes open about the drama. However, if he’so on … whew boy, then it’s enjoyable to watch. ” — Ryan Wilson, CBS Sports
Dwayne Haskins, Ohio State
Sophomore
6-foot-3, 220 pounds
2018 passing stats: 348 for 496, 4,580 yards, 47 touchdowns, 8 INT
Expert’s take: “Should he hammer for the NFL at a comparatively weak quarterback class? For as much as I favor experience for signal-caller prospects, then it might not be a terrible idea. ” — Chris Trapasso, CBS Sports
Will Grier, West Virginia
Senior
6-foot-2, 223 pounds
2018 passing stats: 266 for 397, 3,864 yards, 37 touchdowns, 8 INT
Expert’s take: “Grier has his own problems, but he has NFL-level accuracy that can be modeled over time. His 75.9 adjusted completion percent is 11th best in the country. ” — Mike Renner, Pro Football Focus
Daniel Jones, Duke
Junior
6-foot-5, 220 pounds
2018 passing stats: 207 for 351, 2,251 yards, 17 touchdowns, 7 INT
Expert’s take: ” We like Daniel Jones a lot for all the little things he can to make the players around him . However there are also warning signs that teams will have to evaluate to ascertain if he’s worthy first-rounder. For starters, Jones completed only 59 percent of the throws this year … But there’s no denying that Jones has got the capability to be a very good NFL quarterback. He’s athletic (Jones rushed for 186 yards against UNC) and surprisingly quickly if he decides to run. ” — Ryan Wilson, CBS Sports
Brett Rypien, Boise State
Senior
6-foot-2, 202 pounds
2018 passing stats: 301 for 447, 3,705 yards, 30 touchdowns, 7 INT
Expert’s take: “He has more of a backup’s skill set for the NFL. ” — WalterFootball.com
