Votes are in. Colorado high school football coaches have voted on their 2018 all-state teams and the results were published on CHSAANow.com on Thursday afternoon, with all seniors controlling player-of-the-year awards.
The outlier? Colorado Gatorade Player of the Year, Fairview’s Aidan Atkinson, also a professional who’s already committed to Northwestern over supplies from Boise State, Colorado, CSU, Ole Miss and South Carolina. He’ll be a fun one to see next year.
Here is a breakdown of 2018’s player of the year in every classification.
5A: Aidan Atkinson, QB, Fairview. No surprise here. Atkinson missed the final two games of this season and that he still led all Colorado in death with a wide margin. The 6-foot-3 junior completed 62.5 percent of his moves 3,952 yards, 55 touchdowns and seven interceptions in the Knights’ record-breaking crime. He dislocated his thumb in a 57-7 win over Rocky Mountain at the regular-season finale and hauled out Fairview’s two playoff games.
4A: Zach Weinmaster, RB, Loveland. Weinmaster did a little of everything on the Indians’ path to the Class 4A name and was one of only seven players at the state to rush for 2,000 yards (and among five players to do it at the 11-man level). Besides his 2,004 yards and 30 rushing touchdowns, he grabbed for 114 yards and made 38 tackles and had an interception. He has accepted a preferred spot at Nebraska.
3A: Ty Evans, QB, Palmer Ridge. Evans completed his career as the fifth-leading passer in state history (9,453 yards) and ranks third in career touchdown passes (106). He won back-to-back state titles as a junior and senior and will play North Carolina State next year. He previously committed to Arkansas and Colorado before shifting to NC State this past week.
2A: Jon Nuschy, QB, La Junta. The dual-threat quarterback rushed for 1,759 yards and 24 touchdowns as a senior, in addition to 701 yards and 10 touchdowns passing. He finished his career with 62 career.
1A: Cannan Bennet, QB, Limon. Bennett played for four decades and led the Badgers to a perfect 12-0 record as a senior. He additional 456 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground, and passed 97 yards, 13 touchdowns and only 1 interception.
8-man: Lane Green, RB/DE, Sedgwick County. There may not be a more prominent high school curriculum, in almost any sport or course at Colorado, compared to Cougars. And Green is still a big part of that. The 6-foot-2, 230-pounder was unstoppable throughout his lecture career with 3,834 rushing 64 touchdowns and yards. He averaged seven yards per carry as a senior and found the end zone 29 days (rushing, receiving united ) and produced 58 tackles on defense.
6-man: Bryson Long, QB, Peetz. Long wrapped up his senior season because the nation ’s fifth-leading rusher also led all Colorado players with 47 touchdown runs. He didn’t throw (only 22 tries and no touchdowns), however his elusiveness helped Peetz achieve the 6-man semifinals.
