Mike Tyson will soon step into a boxing ring alongside one of its biggest names – Jake Paul – in what could become one of modern boxing’s biggest events, according to a press release issued by Tyson’s Most Valuable Promotions.
The bout will take place on July 20 at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, as part of a fight card that will air live on Netflix for the first time ever – marking its debut as an arena for combat sports events. Tyson will fight his first bout since an exhibition against Roy Jones Jr. back in 2020 that helped spark a surge of crossover boxing events that focus less on high-level competition than on spectacle.
Since then, Tyson has been busy making an HBO documentary and cultivating his image as an iconic figure in popular culture. At 57 years old and without losing a fight since 2005, he’s widely considered among the greatest heavyweights ever. Meanwhile Paul, 27, is an ex-youtube vlogger turned professional boxer in 2018 who currently boasts a 9-1 professional boxing record with six knockouts under his belt.
Paul’s recent success has not gone without criticism from many; many observers questioning his progression as a boxer. Most often those who take up boxing as a hobby don’t reach similar levels of progression as those who began young and trained their skills in amateur rings; often struggling to generate interest they leave much poorer than before in terms of experience gained.
Paul seems to have done his research in his crossover events; he began competing against real professional boxers with low name recognition instead of well-known MMA stars like Nate Robinson or Anderson Silva. Additionally, Paul has upped the difficulty level of his opponents – evidenced by a first round stoppage of Ryan Bourland last Saturday night.
Still, Tyson remains a massive draw. Even when fighting at lower levels than once was expected of him, just his name alone can draw large crowds to events and pay-per-views. Combine his huge fanbase with Paul’s large fan base and payoff, and you have what will likely become one of the most-watched fights of this century – only question remains is if its worth watching or not; click through our gallery below for some comments from critics regarding it!
