"This is a frightful outlook for someone with a single eye, and also the nature of the injuries I sustained in Afghanistan," Crenshaw explained in a statement issued by his office on Saturday. "Anyone who knows the history of my injuries knows I don't have a 'good eye,' but half an fantastic eye.

Crenshaw said he had surgery Friday in the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston. Doctors put a gas bubble into his eye to act as a "bandage" for his retina, he said. He added he will probably be "face-down for another week two so" and not able to watch anything.

"The surgery went well, however I will be efficiently blind for approximately a month," he said.

"This is the reason why you're not likely to hear from me for a while," Crenshaw added. "I likely won’t be running interviews and likely won’t be posting on social media, except to provide updates on my wellness and recovery. "
