Some Avalanche players probably aren’t thrilled heading this year. Mikko Rantanen isn’t one of these.
Last fall after all , the star right winger overlooked camp.
Rantanen was without a contract in September and training by himself in his native Finland. He signed up a six-year, $55.5 million deal on the final afternoon of the NHL preseason, and combined the Avs just days before they started the year Oct. 3.
Rantanen looked fantastic and had two goals on the opener. But adhering to a 7-0 start, Colorado dropped Rantanen to a broken ankle at the eighth match of the year at St. Louis, forcing him to miss 16 games. He suffered a shoulder injury and missed 12 matches before the NHL stopped its season March 12 due to the pandemic.
Might those injuries have been prevented by him if he had a training camp/preseason?
“It’s difficult to say. Obviously ” Rantanen said on a Zoom telephone from Pepsi Center. “I didn’t think the next accident (had anything to do with this ). I have tripped up and went straight into the boards, almost, therefore I urge ’t think training camp could help with that. But, maybe, it’s agreeing together with the shoulder injury, and what could have occurred if I was from the training camp. It’s difficult to say. ”
What’s been apparent is that Rantanen is thrilled to continue in a new-look time, with no lovers in Edmonton’s Rogers Place when the Avs reunite to perform Aug. 2.
“Different circumstance. Everything will be a little bit different. However, it s exactly the game of hockey,” he said. “We have a fantastic team; everyone ’s wholesome. It’s ’s going to be fun and we have to play our very best to get far. ”

A couple of players across the league have chosen out of this projected 24-team playoffs in which the Avs are one of eight teams guaranteed to play in the field. Rantanen, 23, said that he never considered that choice.
“No kids. No spouse. So no consideration,” he said. “I was ready to playwith. ”
Footnotes. Day 2 of training camp Tuesday featured a change in the Avs’ leading two lines. Left wing Gabe Landeskog fell to the next lineup and Andre Burakovsky was elevated to the first. Landeskog had performed with second-line center Nazem Kadri this year, and Burakovsky has had some time on Nathan MacKinnon’s lineup. … Fourth-line center Pierre-Edouard Bellemare was hurt when linemate Matt Nieto redirected a puck in his torso. Bellemare dropped to his knees but finished the clinic. … The NHL announced the program inside the Canadian bubbles Tuesday. The Avalanche faces Minnesota within an exhibition July 29 at 12:30 p.m. in Edmonton. That will be followed by qualifiers from St. Louis on Aug. 2 (4:30 p.m.), Dallas on Aug. 5 (4:30 p.m.) and Vegas on Aug. 8 (TBD).
