Doctors are concerned Denver protests could lead to uptick in COVID-19 cases

DENVER (KDVR) — Multiple days of big protests have increased the fears of a surge in coronavirus cases in Denver.

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock is requesting anybody who participated to get tested.

The testing center at Pepsi Center is available from 9 a.m. until 5 pm, and also the evaluations are free.  

Public health officials say when they have symptoms or people ought to be tested following a possible exposure.

Several thousand people gathered across the state Capitol in Denver to protest the passing of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis.

Masks were worn by some , but others didn’t. Video shows distancing has been limited.

“We are worried that this is going to bring about an uptick in the amount of COVID-19 cases,” said Dr. Reginald Washington, the Chief Medical Officer at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center and the Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children.

Public health officials say one in 300 Coloradans is now infectious using COVID-19.

“Just numbers-wise have the virus, and also if they are they are extremely likely to spread it. How awful it could turn into, I have no idea. We are prepared for an uptick. We are always prepared for an uptick,” Washington stated.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment states that there will be about a two-week lag until we see whether there has been still an increase in transmitting. Meanwhile, officials have this petition for any prospective protesters:

“Of course mass parties promote spread of this virus, thus we want people to do it safely, to avoid crowding, stay six feet wear a face ” said Jill Hunsaker Ryan, executive manager of the CDPHE.
