Avs Mailbag: Colorado continues to build from prospects, injured players getting healthy, NHL season update and more

Denver Post sports writer Mike Chambers responds to queries in the Avs Mailbag every week throughout the season.

Pose an Avalanche- or NHL-related question for its Avs Mailbag.

When the NHL resumes, how would the Loveland Express be up and running? In other words would be the Eagles be playing so players can have ice time, get in rehab work, work to get out of a slump, replace injured players etc.. Or would the Avs just have additional healthier scratch gamers with a roster?

— Gregory Weiss, Denver

Question, Gregory. At this point, all signs point towards the AHL resuming if/when the NHL does. Nothing’s official concerning that, and NHL teams can extend beyond 23 players for the playoffs, however, the NHL and AHL are a bunch and I suspect they’ll come back. On the other hand, maybe AHL clubs argue they aren’t making any cash playing before empty arenas. Difference in the television revenue using the two leagues. Back in Colorado, I know Eagles proprietor Martin Lind wants to complete the season; he told me . And, obviously, that the Avalanche needs its best prospects to complete the season in Loveland as well.

I believe Alex Pietrangelo is a much better bet than Taylor Hall. Check out Hall’s amounts from this season and ask why Arizona isn’t offering seven or eight for him. Do you know exactly what Joe Sakic’s thinking? Thanks.

— Neal Creswell, Morrison

I m not sure what the query is about. Perhaps you’ve been studying different media types who have indicated the Avs are considering pending free agents Hall and Pietrangelo. However, that won’t happen. Colorado isn’t interested in either. The Avs will still continue to construct from their prospects, maybe not free service. They adore their top-six forward and don’t have room for another right-shot defenseman, with Connor Timmins place to come up and combine Cale Makar and Erik Johnson on the ideal side.

Mike, I know everybody is hunkered down and there are no team pursuits but are teams allowed to work with the players that are injured? And also has the staff made any announcements about the status of those players that were injured? Thank you ’so trusting we’reunite to hockey soon.

— Dan Rish, Albuquerque, New Mexico

Dan, the team is; they’re treating this like the offseason. However, you can bet each of the formerly injured players are ready to go, such as Colin Wilson who hasn’t performed since October. Last week I drove past the Avs’ practice facility in Centennial and his parking lot wasn’t locked in the moment. I don’t believe players are fulfilling much with coaches, etc..

At the stadium match at Air Force Academy I noticed the benches were opposite of that in the Pepsi Center. Anyone understand?

— Scott, Littleton

Interesting. I didn’t realize that. The house team had a selection.

Hi Mike, watched your narrative on Jared Bedmar talking about getting his team prepared in two weeks when and if the season yields. Do you find that the NHL jumping into play, or finishing the adjusting and season playoff schedules. I don’t find ice hockey being played all summer and having a couple weeks of an offseason before the 2020-21 season begins. What are you hearing?

I m hearing that the NHL wishes to finish the regular season, permitting the Avs to perform their final 12 games before the playoffs. However, I’m hearing that the league could get all go into the playoffs or so then to reach 76 games. However, no, I really don ’t find the NHL going into the play whatsoever. Thank you for your query.

Mike, I know gamers are working out on their own, but using rinks shut from skating shape will we find players when hockey returns?

— Tony, Littleton

Players will require 1-2 months to get back to hockey shape, starting with captain’s skates (players only). Jared Bednar says he needs 10 days to two weeks to receive his team prepared. This isn’t baseball. We overlook ’t want a few months of spring training to acquire arms prepared.
