CHSAA state wrestling tournament: Schedule, ticket info and individuals, teams to watch

The 2020 CHSAA state are upon us, with the tournament running Thursday through Saturday in Pepsi Center in Denver.

Here’s everything to understand:

Schedule

The action starts Thursday using 2A/3A preliminaries at 2 pm, followed by 4A/5A preliminaries in 6 pm

On Friday, 2A/3A quarterfinals start at 9 a.m., with first-round consolation matches immediately after. With consolation matches after, 4A/5A quarterfinals start at 12:45. Semifinals for several courses are Friday at 6:45 p.m.

Saturday’s finals start at 6:30 p.m. with the Parade of Champions, with doors opening an hour before. View the full schedule on CHSAANow.

Tickets

Tickets can be purchased online through Ticketmaster or can be purchased in Pepsi Center this weekend.

All sessions are general admission except for the semifinals and the finals. General admission tickets are $11 presale and $14 day-of to get students/seniors. Reserved seating tickets for the semifinals is $12 presale/$16 seating tickets for the prices are $14 presale/$18.

Possible four-timers

There have been 24 four-time winners at the history of Colorado wrestling, which amount is very likely to grow Saturday night. John Mall’s Wesley Van Matre (2A, 145), Windsor’s Dominick Serrano (4A, 132), Windsor’s Isaiah Salazar (4A, 182) and Pueblo East’s Andy Garcia (4A, 285) are going to your four-peat, and every is a heavy favorite in his various bracket.

If Serrano and Salazar both win it will be the first time at CHSAA history that a college has two wrestlers clinch their fourth tournament in exactly the same year.

Undefeated wrestlers

The potential four-timers are to observe. Here’s the listing of those eight star wrestlers heading into the tournament, using their school, classification and record.

Crowley County’s Adam Schulz, 2A 170, 38-0; Weld Central’s Roberto Estrada, 3A 106, 44-0; Colorado Springs Christian’s Jake Hamilton, 3A 145, 24-0; Valley’s Jaziah Whaley, 3A 160, 37-0; Windsor’s Serrano (39-0 in 4A 132) and Salazar (33-0 in 4A 182); Cherokee Trail’s Sam Hart, 5A 220, 34-0; Doherty’s Tyson Beauperthuy, 5A 170, 36-0.

Title frontrunners

Pomona has won three of six and their four 5A names overall, and the Panthers are to replicate using a field-high 13 qualifiers. But Cherokee Trail (10 qualifiers) as well as Ponderosa, Poudre along with Rocky Mountain (9 qualifiers every ) have the firepower to make matters interesting.

In 4A, the title race should be shut. Windsor, using a set of undefeated wrestlers along with 11 qualifiers overall, is the preferred but Pueblo East (11 qualifiers) and Pueblo County (10) will put strain on the Wizards, while Mesa Ridge (11), Thompson Valley (10) along with Cheyenne Mountain (10) have the numbers to create noise.

Jefferson is your top-ranked 3A team by On The Mat heading into the tournament, along with the Saints are tied with multi-colored defending champ Alamosa for its most qualifiers in 10. The Mean Moose is going to likely be in contention, as they’re, (CHSAA-record 13 state titles overall), while Pagosa Springs (9 qualifiers), Eagle Valley (8), Eaton (8) and Lamar (8 ) ) must also challenge.

In 2A, Rocky Ford has the most qualifiers in 13, and it will determine to duel Wray, that includes 11 qualifiers and is the two-time defending champion, for its crown. Also keep an eye out for Highland (12 qualifiers), John Mall (11), Centauri (11), Cedaredge (10) and Buena Vista (10).
