Chasing Gretzky, Alex Ovechkin could join 700-goal club against Avalanche

Alex Ovechkin will face the Avalanche on Thursday night needing two aims to become the eighth part of their NHL’s 700 club. But because of his age, that landmark goes past hockey and places the Washington Capitals superstar on par with the best professional athletes of all time.

The Capitals’ media relations team duly suggests that 700 targets are equivalent to 30,000 points in the NBA, 600 home runs in MLB and 400 touchdowns passing in the NFL, and just two players in these other leagues reached the benchmark before age 35: Basketball’s LeBron James and the overdue Kobe Bryant.

Ovechkin, 34, won’t flip 35 till September. Wayne Gretzky scored his 894th goal if he was 38 in 1999.

“He’therefore the ideal goal scorer in hockey’s history. Definitely,” Avalanche defenseman Nikita Zadorov of all Ovechkin after Wednesday’s optional clinic. “He’ll pass Gretzky. I feel like Gretzky played an easier time. At the moment, to score 50 goals is hard. And Ovie keeps doing it. So Ovie is still the best goal scorer of all time and the best Russian to to play the sport. ”

Zadorov and Ovechkin were both born and raised in Moscow, Russia’s capital community, that Zadorov stated is not a hockey s towns. Zadorov, 24, was honored to play with Ovechkin for Russia at the 2019 World Championship in Slovakia spring.

Avs winger Valeri Nichushkin also played with Ovechkin internationally, at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

“For sureit’therefore a privilege or with him,” Zadorov stated of Ovechkin. “Playing with him in the World Championship was an exciting moment for me personally. When I was a kid, I had been watching himand because of him, probably so many kids go play baseball at Russia. He s definitely a huge portion of our hockey history for our nation. ”

Zadorov is excited to see Ovechkin achieve 700 targets.

“But not against us he said.

In case it occurs Thursday, it would come in Ovechkin’s 1,140th career game, which are the games required to get to the landmark in NHL history, according to the Capitals. Wayne Gretzky reached 700 in 886 games, and Brett Hull (1,157 games) will be the only other player to attain it in over 1,200 games.
