Kyle Connor’s hat trick lifts Winnipeg to 7-4 victory over the Avalanche

Considering that the midpoint of this NHL season, the Avalanche is connected to hardship.

Colorado forged three ties Tuesday night but not headed and dropped 1-4-1 in its last six games with a 7-4 loss to the Winnipeg Jets at the Pepsi Center.

The Avs, who allowed four third-period targets after tying it 3-3, have appreciated points streaks of eight and nine games this year, however this current stretch is their second-worst of this campaign. They had been 0-4-1 in late October and early November.

“We’re finding different approaches to drop every night lately, and it’therefore frustrating,” Avs defenseman Erik Johnson stated.

Winnipeg ahead Kyle Connor completed his hat trick with two objectives, starting with a power-play tally at 10:45 to break a 3-3 tie. Connor scored back on goalie Philipp Grubauer at 16:31 before Blake Wheeler scored his second of the night using an empty-netter at 17:39.

The Avs, who got a meaningless target from Nazem Kadri in the last moment, still outshot the Jets with a commanding margin — 43-26.

However, Colorado coach Jared Bednar said, “They had been coming to us. They had been capitalizing, it seemed like, from the rush on each chance. ”

He included: “We worked hard. We played with emotion. We’d passion. Our power play (2-for-4) looked fantastic, got us a couple objectives. We’re shooting, hit a couple posts. … But we’ve got to check. You need to check to win. We’re turning over pucks and doing lots. However, you’ve got to check. This ’s 5-on-5 and that’s details about the penalty kill. (We were) slow rush coverage was not great — not enough communication. It costs us. We’ve got to check. We’ve got to induce it to be much more challenging. ”

Avs superstar Nathan MacKinnon scored his 23rd and 24th goals of the year, and Gabe Landeskog got his 10th to tie it 3-3 at 7:15 to the next period. Landeskog struck while the Connor had been working out a double-minor to get high-sticking defenseman Sam Girard, that assisted on MacKinnon’s two goals.

Connor composed for blooding Girard by scoring seven minutes into Nazem Kadri’s punishment for interference. From beneath the crease, Connor redirected a blast from defenseman Neal Pionk.

The Avs (23-13-4), that remain tied for second in the Central Division with 50 points, could perform with their 41st game Thursday and reach the halfway point of this year after hosting the St. Louis Blues in a different divisional showdown.

“It feels like it’s hard to win at this time,” Avs winger Mikko Rantanen stated. “We perform with periods at times, but we take ourselves. I believe that it ’s in our minds. Whether it’s tie game, or even we ’re one up or down , we get fearful that (a meltdown ) will be going to occur again. ”

A turning point occurred after Colorado tied it 2-2 with MacKinnon’s next goal, which came at 13:47 of the next period. Right after the puck entered the net, Jets defenseman Anthony Bitetto employed a violent crosscheck to ship J.T. Compher to the web as well. Compher recovered his hooks, and a scrum ensued.

Bitetto and Compher were assessed roughing minors, however, the crosscheck had been dismissed, sending the teams. Less than a minute Mark Scheifele believed to restore Winnipeg’s lead.

Bitetto might get a call from NHL Player Safety on Wednesday, however his crosscheck went Tuesday — and rather than Colorado heading on the power play immediately after MacKinnon’s goal the Avs were irate, along with also their defensive-end turnover contributed to Scheifele’s target.

Footnotes. The Avs’ healthy scrapes were ahead Vladislav Kamenev along with defenseman Mark Barberio. … Colorado outshot the Jets 17-8 in the initial period and 14-12 in the next. … Following Thursday’s game against the Blues, the Avs start a three-game road trip Saturday at New Jersey. They play with the Islanders and Rangers on consecutive nights in New York.
