Minus Cale Makar, the Avalanche loses 5-4 in OT to the Calgary Flames

Life with No Cale Makar was a Tumultuous experience for the Avalanche on Monday night.

Playing without its precious rookie defenseman for first time this year, along with also the very first time in 40 games dating to last year’s Gravity, Colorado gave up too many goals and didn’t score sufficient at a 5-4 overtime loss to the Calgary Flames in the Pepsi Center.

The Avs saw their six-game winning streak snapped after Sean Monahan scored 2:09 into OT, beating goalie Pavel Francouz out of a wrist shot between the circles to extend Calgary’s winning streak. Superstar Nathan MacKinnon scored one goal and assisted on another as Colorado rallied from a deficit to force overtime and gather a point.

“Thirty-three moments of sub-par hockey. Loved our conclusion,” stated Avs coach Jared Bednar, whose team was coming off a street trip with wins at Toronto, Montreal and Boston. “I thought we seemed tired. We didn’t have a great deal of energy. Execution was weak. Looked just like a deficiency of energy to me. ”

He added: “Umpteen turnovers in our own zone. Didn’t move as a D-corps. No leap from our forwards. Goaltending was subpar. The whole deal. Wasn’t our team’s attempt. On the bright sidewe’ll take the point and run. Game coming off a road trip, three tough matches, all wins that are big, coming from playing a hungry group, winning four. ”

Makar, who leads all NHL rookies in scoring and is tied for second among the team ’so called defensemen, endured what is believed to be an injury to his left shoulder Saturday’s 4-1 win at Boston. The group says he’s day to day with the upper-body injury.

Calgary scored two quick aims to take command. Andrew Mangiapane gave the Flames their first lead of the match, 3-2, only 12 seconds. And then just 1:27 afterwards, Michael Frolik capped a wonderful play Tobias Rieder to make it 4-2.

But then MacKinnon scored his 19th goal of the year together along with his wrist shot at only 3:59 of this period. Then he aided on Joonas Donskoi’s target.

“Obviously, rough start to the third party. We fought ” MacKinnon explained. “Would have been nice to receive two points. ”

Besides overlooking Makar, Colorado was with no second-line center Nazem Kadri, who missed his third straight game with an injury. Kadri is a candidate to return Wednesday from the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Avs continued to play with no forward Colin Wilson along with defenseman Erik Johnson, the latter of whom he might start this past week, skating in his own.
