The NHL season is a month old and this might be submitted under the “Way Too Early Stats” folder, however, it’s ’s tough to dismiss Avalanche newcomer Cale Makar’s numbers.
Through 12 games, the newly turned 21-year-old has tallied 10 points — a goal and nine assists. He’s on speed for 68 points annually, which would obliterate the document to an Avs rookie defenseman since the team moved into Colorado — 34 by John-Michael Liles from the 2003-04 season.
Heck, he’d destroy the franchise record owned by Bruce Bell, that totaled 37 to the Quebec Nordiques in 1984-85.
Makar also was the third highest-scoring October to get an Avs newcomer, tied with Paul Stastny (2006-07). Just Marek Svatos (2005-06) and Ryan O’Reilly (2009-10), that every accrued 11, had greater.
Only time will tell if Makar will keep up the pace. Adding his 10 playoff games last year, he’s averaging 0.73 points through 22 games. But O’Reilly and his torrid begin completed the year with 26 points in 81 games.
But when Makar does, here’s Paul Stastny owns the Colorado list for most points for a rookie in 78. Along with also the mark for most points by an Avs defenseman has been held by Sandis Ozolinsh, who’d 68 (23 goals and 48 assists).
Incidentally: Hall of Famer Larry Murphy holds the NHL record with 76 points (16 goals, 60 assists) with the Los Angeles Kings at the 1980-81 season.
