Week in Review: Official Definition of “Museum” Sparks Debate, Concerns Arise Over Suffragist Monument

For nearly 50 years, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) has described the museum “a nonprofit institution” this “acquires, conserves, researches, communicates, and exhibits that the concrete and intangible heritage of humankind and its environment for the aims of schooling, study, and enjoyment. ” But an updated version of the definition would incorporate mention of “human dignity and social justice,” references which have split the consortium’s 40,000 professionals representing 20,000 museums across cultural lines. And the past week, 24 domestic branches of the council — including people of France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Canada, and Russia — asked a postponement of the revision’s official vote to be able to produce a “new proposal. ” | Hyperallergic

For nearly a year, scholars have enticed Monumental Women’s Statue Fund (the nonprofit financing the sculpture) of whitewashing history by spotlighting the suffragists Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony without spending equal tribute to the most girls of color who contributed to the motion. The following week, the team said that the statue will include Sojourner Truth, an abolitionist and girls ’s rights activist best known for the rousing “Ain’Can I a Woman? ” address delivered at the 1851 Women’s Convention in Akron, Ohio. But not everybody agrees with the Statue Fund’s angle on history. More than 20 leading professors have signed onto a letter asking that the public art procedure between the monument eventually become more transparent and inclusive. | Hyperallergic

Over 120 art world professionals have signed a letter calling for the Rene and Veronica di Rosa Foundation in Napa, California to cease its plan to market its collection of 1,600 functions. They state ldquo & the selling;would lead to an irretrievable loss to the art community. ” Arists Mark di Suvero, Peter Saul, and Nancy Hoffman are among its signatories. | ARTnews

More than 500 people rushed the roads of Mexico City this past week, calling on government officials to create stronger laws against sexual assault following two teens accused policemen of them. Protests found in the wake of these allegations are dubbed “glitter protests” after activists dumped pink glitter on the Mexican funds ’s police chief earlier in the week. Demonstrators have claimed that city officials have failed to properly investigate the rape accusations. On Friday night, activists voiced their anguish by vandalizing Mexico City’s & “Angel of Independence” monument with graffiti. | Hyperallergic

After agreeing outcry, in an emergency special session of the Alaska state legislature, agents restored full funding to the nation ’s arts service in a new budget arrangement with Governor Dunleavy, that didn’t exercise his veto power to remove it . Former British Council employee Aras Amiri was sentenced to 10 years in a Tehran prison for “ethnic infiltration by the British intelligence services in Iranian internal affairs” after losing her charm. She was detained in March 2018 during a trip with her grandmother and now is serving her sentence in Tehran. The council is opposing any allegations of espionage and states, “We remain very concerned for Aras’so safety and health and continue on to refute the accusation levied against her. | TAN

After three years of battle, the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) has acquired “Iris Bleus, Jardin du Petit Gennevilliers” (1892) by Gustave Caillebotte. Although the specific amount hasn’t been shown, it went for over $1 million. In an earlier sale in 2016, the work was offered to a British art dealer at a Toronto auction for $678,500, but has been blocked from leaving the country. The AGO is getting a $540,000 grant from the Canadian government to assist the purchase.
